Supporting compliance, accelerating decarbonisation
Navigating maritime’s complex and evolving regulatory landscape is a challenge for every shipowner and operator. The Silverstream® System supports compliance with key international and regional regulations – including EEDI, EEXI, CII, FuelEU Maritime, and the EU ETS.
By delivering proven fuel and emissions savings from day one, our technology helps future-proof fleets and accelerates shipping’s journey to net zero.
Cutting emissions, managing costs, staying compliant
The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has set ambitious targets for reducing greenhouse gas emissions, including achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. Interim checkpoints – cutting emissions by at least 20% by 2030 – are placing increasing pressure on shipowners and operators to act now. At the same time, new global regulations like the Energy Efficiency Existing Ship Index (EEXI), the Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII), and regional measures such as the European Union Emissions Trading System (EU ETS) are introducing both operational complexity and additional costs.
With future fuels expected to be significantly more expensive and the IMO’s Net-zero Framework taking shape, improving energy efficiency is vital.
Our fuel-agnostic Silverstream® System delivers immediate and verified reductions in fuel consumption and emissions across key shipping segments. By harnessing the power of air, our technology reduces frictional resistance, helping operators improve compliance scores and cut costs. As shipping moves towards net zero, integrating proven efficiency technologies like ours is critical to reducing emissions, minimising financial exposure and maintaining commercial competitiveness.
Our role across key maritime regulations
Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI)
The EEDI promotes the use of energy efficiency measures for the design of new ships to make them less polluting. Our system is an advocated clean technology under the EEDI for newbuilds. We worked with DNV to gain EEDI approval for the Northern Lights CO₂ carriers, Northern Pioneer and Northern Pathfinder – the first ships to feature air lubrication on an EEDI certificate. DNV validated a 5% net fuel saving and established a protocol for assessing the Silverstream® System’s impact, demonstrating its effectiveness in helping newbuilds meet stringent design efficiency targets.
Energy Efficiency Existing Ship Index (EEXI)
The EEXI sets mandatory energy efficiency standards for existing ships to reduce their carbon emissions. It requires vessels to meet a specific efficiency target based on their size and type, encouraging operators to implement technical measures or operational changes to comply. By reducing frictional resistance and improving fuel efficiency, the Silverstream® System enhances overall energy performance and supports compliance with EEXI. It is a proven technology that can be retrofitted within 10 days or less, ensuring minimal disruption to regular shipping activities.
Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII)
The IMO’s CII regulation rates the carbon intensity of vessels in operation. It requires ships of 5,000 gross tonnage and above to track their operational carbon intensity and demonstrate continuous improvement within their assigned rating level. The Silverstream® System helps applicable vessels maintain or improve their CII ratings by delivering measurable reductions in fuel consumption and emissions.
FuelEU Maritime
FuelEU Maritime sets maximum limits for the annual average greenhouse gas (GHG) intensity of the energy used by ships above 5,000 gross tonnage calling at European ports, regardless of their flag. It incentivises the use of clean technologies for ships to support decarbonisation in the sector. The Silverstream® System is a fuel-agnostic solution that improves energy efficiency regardless of fuel type, making it a valuable enabler of compliance under this regulation.
EU Emissions Trading System (EU ETS)
The EU ETS requires polluters to pay for their GHG emissions. With maritime transport now included, fuel and emissions reductions directly translate into cost savings. The Silverstream® System reduces CO₂ output by improving vessel efficiency, helping owners and operators cut their emissions liabilities and manage their exposure to the rising cost of carbon within the EU trading framework.
